•   CONTENTION   -   A NEW COLOR TO PAINT THE WORLD

As mentioned in the letter Penelo wrote to Larsa in the ending of Final Fantasy XII, Basch no longer serves Dalmasca. Instead he replaces his late brother as Judge Magister Gabranth due to his request prior to his death. Although it may seem as if he abandoned his country, with the amount of rumors spread about him killing the king and his supposed execution, he has no place in Dalmasca. Basch is blamed for the turmoil set upon Dalmasca after the king was killed, and even if someone such as Ashe, Ondore, or Larsa were to publicly renounce his execution the general public would have a hard time accepting it. In addition, it wouldn't do any good to the Archadian Empire itself considering the political condition it was left in after Vayne's death. It would also give the Archadian Empire a worse perspective to the people such as those living in Rabanastre in a time when they and Dalmasca are at peace with each other.

Gabranth's helmet Judge Magisters are primarily seen as the elite guard for the Solidor family, but it should never be overlooked that they also epitomize the Archadian law. They enforce the law, but they do not have power to change it if it goes against their personal opinions and beliefs unless they disobey the law themselves or abandon their duty as Judge Magister. Among the current and past Judge Magisters shown in Final Fantasy XII, they all share the same character flaw: emotion. Although it is natural for someone to have emotion, in order for Judge Magisters to do their jobs effectively, it would be logical for them not to have personal interference. An instance of this would include Judge Magister Drace when she attempted to arrest Vayne for killing the Emperor and framing members of the Senate for doing so. Drace fully understood that she had violated the law by raising her blade towards Vayne, but it was due to her impulse of wanting to protect Larsa that she does this.

Judge Magister Gabranth's duty, as requested by the Late Emperor Gramis, was to act as a shield for Larsa as requested by the late Emperor Gramis. He wanted for Gabranth to dirty his hands in place of Larsa. Nearing his final moments, Gabranth had deemed himself unworthy of being called by his birth name due to his betrayal to his brother and country, it was his personal request for Basch to take over his duty to of protecting Larsa. So in other words, Gabranth does not die, but instead Noah does.

Basch as Gabranth Basch is the ideal Judge Magister because he has nothing apart from carrying out his brother's will of protecting Larsa. The only thing which may hold him down is Ashe, but he sees that she is capable of handling things on her own as Dalmasca is rebuilding itself. With the public believing that Basch was executed, it wouldn't be problematic as Judge Magister because the only people who need to know his identity are those he serves, for instance Larsa, as it is only higher officials he presents himself with his helmet removed. Even if someone were to assume that he wasn't Noah, Basch could still claim that he is because they are identical twins after all. In addition, Basch keeps the name Judge Magister Gabranth, probably not only in memory of his brother, but also in memory of his mother, as Gabranth was her surname which Noah took as his own when he left the Republic of Landis.
