•   CONTENTION   -   PERSONALITY

As the story progresses in the game, Basch is one of the few characters in the main party who doesn't explicitly announce that he is going to change his way of life. He does change as a character, but it is mostly seen as a internal change that can be noticed by his actions.

      ▏▎   THE KNIGHT'S CODE

Of all the characters in Final Fantasy XII, Basch probably went through the most physical and emotional hardships, all for the sake of the Knight's Code, a set of rules and beliefs which knights are to abide to. It is apparent how dearly Basch adheres to this set of ideals when Vaan, Balthier, and Fran encounters him as he is restrained in his cage in the Nalbina prison. When he realizes that they weren't with the Empire, he please them to aid him escape "for the sake of Dalmasca". Additionally, once he and the others reaches Rabanastre, he departs from the group to find assistance from the Resistance. Instead of taking time for his mind and body to recuperate from the effects of prison, there in urgency of finding Amalia, who he understands is the Princess Ashe. This urgency is linked to Basch having lost his home land, the Republic of Landis, to the Archadian Empire in the past. Since the Republic of Landis was a smaller country, it was easily subjected, but although Dalmasca had also fallen into the hands of the Empire and the fact that the princess is still alive gave Basch enough of a reason to do whatever he could in his power to utilize the rare opportunity, as it was a chance probably not given to him when he was younger. In other words, a second chance of saving a country he loves. Due to an order from King Raminas prior to his death, the Knight's Code also initially gives Basch a sort of linear type of thinking. When first reunited with Ashe in the Dreadnaught Leviathan, he was bent on rescuing Ashe and helping her retrieve her birthright regardless of whether she hated him or not.

An interesting thing about the Knight's Code is the ideal that knights should put their countries ahead of themselves. Due to this, Basch doesn't mind being condemned a traitor because he finds that the shame of not being able to save his country as being much worse.
