The Republic of Landis is the mother country of both Basch and his brother Noah. As hinted in the dialogues in the game, the Republic of Landis was most likely a smaller country situated in the west, and due to the Rozalian and Archadian Empires who are in constant struggle with each other for political dominance in the west. One of the effects of their wars was the destruction and dominance over other smaller countries along the way.

It was in 687 that the Republic of Landis was invaded and absorbed into the Archadian Empire. As they were a smaller country, they had no chance against the Empire. During its aftermath was a diaspora. The people of Landis who detested the empire scattered to other countries, and those who gave into the Empire stayed. Basch happened to be one those who left the Republic Landis for Dalmasca, and Noah was one who joined the Archadian Empire.

Although two characters of influence in the Final Fantasy XII story are from this country, the Republic of Landis is only mentioned four times, so it isn't as noticeable amongst the other mix of countries that were mentioned. It was first brought up by Emperor Gramis during a private meeting with Judge Magister Gabranth. The second mention was when Basch was explaining things about the Rozzarian Empire while traveling through the Sandsea to Raithwall's tomb. The third and fourth mentions were in taunts by Gabranth directed to Basch.

The Republic of Landis may not seem to be a place or topic of importance in the story of Final Fantasy XII but due to the events which resulted in the turmoil of their homeland, it happens to be the thing that drives both Basch and Noah to do what they must for their new home country.
