The Weapon
Every character in Soul Calibur weilds a weapon. Mitsurugi's weapon happens to be a katana.
Katana
A Katana is a curved sword which is used for slashing. The sword of a samurai represents
"the soul of the samurai". Children are taught how to use the sword at a very young age.
The katana was mostly used in five different positions:
- Upper: sword held overhead with the blade pointed towards the opponent's eyes.
- Middle: sword held overhead with he blade pointed towards the opponent's body
- Lower: sword held low, below the opponent's sword, with the blade ready to strike the opponent's arms and hands
- Left: sword held horizontally to the left side. Used to deflect lower hits and attacking from below before slicing diagonally upward across the opponent's body.
- Right: sword held horizontally on the right side. Used when wanting to move to the "upper" position before slicing downward across the opponent.
Story
Shishi-oh is the name of Mitsurugi's katana. Mitsurugi was soundly defeated and disgraced in front of his lord by a rifleman bearing the Tanegashima rifle during an exhibition duel. This defeat was the catalyst that forced him to perfect his swordmannship and seek a weapon strong enough to defeat the rifle. During his intensive training, he became dissatisfied with his old sword Korefuji and replaced it with Shishi-oh, a katana with a longer and wider blade. Mitsurugi perfected many new sword fighting moves to defeat the rifle with Shishi-oh, the Relic being just one of them.
