There once was a Nine Tailed Fox Demon, Kyuubi, who ravaged the area which the Konoha village lies. The Kyuubi was most feared mostly because of its strengh for being able to cause tsunamis or disturb near by mountains with just a swing
of its tail. Out of feed of their safety, the Konoha villagers started a battle between them and the Kyuubi. Many lives were lost during that war including that of the Fourth Hokage.
Yondaime was the one who sealed the Kyuubi using a forbidden sealing technique, Fuuin Justu Shiki Fuujin, which summons the Shinto God of Death, Shinigami, to the battle field. The role of the God of Death is to devour the Victim's soul and it is done by sealing it within a host
body. To summon the Shinigami, the user must sacrifice his or her own should in exchange for its help and when the soul is sealed the victim will suffer in the belly of the Shingami without gaining release and while they are to hate and battle with the jutsu user for eternity. This forbidden jutsu
takes a while to activate for the Shinigami must be linked to the user's living body. In order to do that the Shinigami wraps beads on his left hand which follows with marking which appear from his hand to his arm. The shinigami will latch onto the victim's body by grabbing his or her soul. One thing to note
about why the Shinigami would have his hand through the user's stomach and why it would reach for the victim's stomach is because it is believed that that was where the soul lies. (Another example of this would be Samurais performing Seppuku, they would slit their stomachs in an act of suicide because they believed that the soul lies in the stomach.)
The Shinigami devours the victim's soul by slicing part of it with his knife and then eats it. The sealing is complete or teminated if the Shinigami has completely devoured the soul or if the user runs out of chakra.
The beauty about the way Yondaime sealed the Kyuubi within the body of a infant, Naruto, is that the seal enables the chakra of the Kyuubi to mix with the Chakra of Naruto which results in an extra reserve of chakra during a heated battle. No one
knew of this until Jiraiya had Naruto under his tutelage. The reasoning behind the reason why Yondaime sealed the Kyuubi within the body of an infant has not been revealed.
