Thanks to Kashimoto, the creator of Naruto, fans are now able to see how Yondaime was like when he was alive in chapters 237 - 344 of the manga when the story was concentrated on Kakashi's past. During those chapters, we now know that when Yondaime was alive, he along with the rest of the village were faced with the difficulties of "The Third Secret World War", which was a time when there were troubles between the 5 great shinobi countries' goverments.
According to Kakashi's flashback, Yondaime was a very considerate, caring, and mature person. Although it isn't said whether he was already Hokage during that time period in those chapters, the way Yondaime acts during those chapters gives him the image that he is mature enough to put the lives of the villagers of Konoha ahead of his own when he fought Kyuubi. Despite his age and how much longer he could have lived, he made the ultimate sacrifice of dying for his village.
According to Tsunade's description of Yondaime, he was very rude, and also annoying. In other words he is quite similar to what she sees in Naruto . For Jiraiya, he sees Yondaime in a more positive point of view. In a scene found shortly after, Jiraiya explained why he wanted to have Naruto in his tutelage instead of Sasuke. The reason was because it wouldn't be fun to train someone who was already a genius. In Jiraiya's eyes, he saw Yondaime being smart, popular, and extremely talented in all justu. Compared to Tsunade's description it is completely opposite to what she said. Yondaime most likely was quite similar to Naruto. He probably fooled around alot, and didn't do well in the Ninja Acadey because if he were a genius, Jiraiya would most likely have had no intention of having Yondaime under his tutelage.
Yondaime most like have also grown up in a difficult situation like Naruto had. That may have also been the reason why he had chose to have an infant to have the Kyuubi sealed in. Perhaps it was Yondaime's attempt for an orphan to be recognized rather than to experience the lonelyness of growing up without parents. Unforunately Yondaime's intention of making Naruto a hero within the Konoha village was back fired because the villagers had instead shunned Naruto. However, there will be the day where the village will depend on Naruto and give him recognition because of of all the ninja's of Konoha, he has the most stamina and chakra. That is all thanks to the Kyuubi which they had dreaded in the past.
