In the Naruto manga, chapters 239 to 244 concentrate solely on Kakashi and his comrade's past. when Kakashi was growing up, the great five shinobi countries' governments were all unstable and eventually developed into what was called "The Third Secret World War". Although it is unknown what age Kakashi was during the war, at the time Kakashi becomes a Jounin and his Genin group were still under the supervision of Yondaime.

Kakashi is the son of a renowned ninja by the name of Hatake Sakumi, who was known to be on the same level as the Legendary Sannin. Sakumi was also given the alias "the great white fang" for his white hair and chakra. Being the son of a genius, Kakashi sometimes looks down upon his peers and comrades because of they seemed inferior compared to his father. Kakashi's father is also known as being someone who died protecting the village, but rather he was discraced by the village and eventually killed himself. Five years before Kakashi became a Jounin, Sakumi went on a top secret mission and during that mission he was to choose whether to succeed in the mission or to sacrifice the lives of his companions. Sakumo chose break the rules of the village by abandoning the mission to save the lives of his companions and that resulted in a great loss of lives for the fire country. He was blamed for the losses and was also blamed by his companions who he had saved. Eventually Sakumo was disgraced and later commit suicide. After the death of his father, Kakashi became particularly keen on following the rules of the village. Most likely because he did not want to end up disgraced like his father had been. Kakashi became strict and was particularly rude to those who do not closely follow the rules.

The Jounin who took care of Kakashi's group while he was a Genin was none other than the Fourth Hokage. Students of previous Hokages are those trained under ninjas who were previously taught by them are usually the more talented Genins. Kakashi's Genin team consists of two other teammates, a Obito and Rin. Obito is from the Uchiha clan and Rin, due to the two colored markings on her cheeks, is most likely part of the Inuzaka clan. When the group was together, Kakashi is often seen quarreling with Obito whenever he did something wrong. Their relationship mirrors the relationship that Sasuke and Naruto shares.


On the day Kakashi became a Jounin, he was the commander of a three man team which consisted of Rin, Obito, and himself. During the mission, an enemy kidnapped Rin. Knowing and undertanding what had happened to his father five years earlier, Kakashi was determined to continue the mission without Rin. However, Obito objected Kakashi's decisions and defied his order by attempting to save Rin himself. Most importantly, during their arguement, Obito mentioned the phrase which Kakashi told Team 7 near the end of their Genin exam in regards to ninjas who do not care for their comrades being lower than trash. Eventually Kakashi came to his senses and went to help Obito. In attempt to save Obito, Kakashi had his left eye slashed by the enemy. Incidentally, that action also activated Obito's sharingan. Obito and Kakashi managed to save Rin, but as the fight progressed the enemy decided to finish the battle by crushing the group with falling rocks. As the group attemped to flee, one of the rocks managed to hit Kakashi and Obito proceeded to save him. As a result of saving Kakashi, Obito had the right side of his body completely crushed by a boulder. With the help of Rin's medical jutsu, Kakashi received a bittersweet gift from his comrade, Obito, in form of an eye.

It is because of Obito's Sharingan that Kakashi gained the name "Sharingan Kakashi" or "Copy Cat Ninja Kakashi". Perhaps, giving him the eye, Obito is in a way help Kakashi redeem his family name for the risks his father, Sakumi, did to protect his comrades.

Kakashi used to be part of ANBU. He is very familiar about the different branches in ANBU and is also aware of what and how they do things. He is also familiar with the approximate amount of needed ANBU members which may be needed for dangerous situations. Also, Kakashi's only original move, Chidori, is mainly based for assassination purposes and his summon specializes in tracking. Both which are useful for a ANBU member.
