At first glance, Kakashi is very relaxed and laid back. He's usually chronically late for everything and he also always seems to be rather happy. However, when asked about his past he become quiet. Compared to the other characters of the Naruto series, Kakashi seems to be the most vague when it comes to learning about the character. For example, when Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura first met him, Kakashi asked them to introduce themselves by saying their names, their likes, dislikes, dreams, and hobbies. When asked by his students to introduce himself, all he basically said was his name but the most shocking thing was that also said that he had no intention of telling them his likes and dislikes which could also be deemed reasonable because giving out too much information could be considered telling other people their weaknesses.

Throughout the Naruto series, Kakashi is seen to be a respected ninja. Considering that he was a Genin under the Fourth Hokage along with two others, graduating from Ninja Academy at the age of 5, taking the Chuunin at the age of 6, and having a Sharingan which he has used to copy over 1,000 techniques, what Tsunade said about Kakashi in regards to him being a genius ninja is most likely true. Kakashi also never brags about anything, nor does he even talk about his Sharingan much. Kakashi is one of the most modest characters throughout the Naruto series.

The darker side of Kakashi was unveiled shortly after the death of the third Hokage. Before the ceremony for the Third Hokage, Kakashi was seen by the memorial stone which names of ninjas who have passed away while on duty were carved on. A woman from Anbu, was walking towards the stone with flowers for a friend who had also passed away while on duty asked Kakashi whether he was there for Obito and why he was always late for exams. Kakashi explained to the woman he was there very early but didn't know what to say when he got there. Then he also mentioned that he used to be foolish and did meaningless things all the time and whenever he was visiting the memorial he could think of nothing but punishing his old self. Obito is the bestfriend he mentioned to Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura while they did their genin exams who had died on duty. The reason why Kakashi is so stringent on teamwork is because what happened to Obitio. He said that he used to do many foolish and meaningless things in the past. It is because of that and the lack of teamwork on his part being the reason why his bestfriend is dead.

The events that happened in the past may also impact the reason why he singles out Sasuke for training during the last part of the chuunin exam. The reason why he singled Sasuke from the rest of the group was because Sasuke was the same as him. Not only in battle, but in life. They both have Sharingans, they both are refered to as geniuses, but most importantly they both also had a tragic past. For example before Sasuke went off with the four Sound ninjas, Kakashi gave him a talk in regards to people who end up tragedy due to their seeking revenge and those who are successful in revenge are left with emptiness. Sasuke claimed that Kakashi didn't understand what his pain felt and asked whether Kakashi would take back what he said before in regards to those who seek revenge if he was to kill the ones he loved most. Kakashi replied by saying that if Sasuke were to do that, it wouldn't be possible because they have already been killed. Nothing in the manga or anime has been said about Kakashi seeking revenge towards those who killed the ones he loved, however if he had, the way he is now, it is inevitable that he has matured much since then because he realizes that there are people who are far worse situations than he is in and that there are also people in the world who are there for him.
