If they of all the aspiring ninjas who took the Genin exams under Kakashi, all but Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura failed because they proved themselves worthy to be under Kakashi's instruction because they were the only ones who demonstrated teamwork. According to Kakashi, all three of his Team 7 students specialize in something in Konoha. Naruto is known to be the noisy ninja and is the number one ninja in suprising people, Sasuke is Konohas's number one rookie, and Sakura is the village's shrewdest child.

Uzumaki Naruto - Knowing that Naruto had Kyuubi no Youko sealed in his body, Kakashi was not prejudice towards Naruto like most of the villagers of the Hidden Leaf Village. Of all the Jounins in Konoha, the one who is most appropriate to teach Naruto would most likely be Kakashi. Being one of the Fourth Hokage's students, only Kakashi truly understand the legacy that the Fourth Hokage left behind. Kakashi has always known that Naruto's amount of chakra would eventually be greater than his and Sasuke's someday and he trains him and Sasuke in a way that they would manage their chakra efficiently so as they learn to use their chakra at the fullest extent they would have knowledge in how to use it wisely. Not only did Kakashi teach Naruto well, but handing him over to Jiraiya has given Naruto more possibilities to explore his hidden power.

Uchiha Sasuke - Like Kakashi had said during the final round of the Chuunin exam, Kakashi singles Sasuke out of the group because he was the same as him. Not only do they both have Sharingans, but they are also went through similar situations in life. Like Kakashi, Sasuke was labeled a genius when he was a child and all their loved ones has been killed. Later in the series, Sasuke escapes from Konoha to join Orochimaru.

Haruno Sakura - Kakashi doesn't interact with Sakura as much as he does with Naruto and Sasuke however it is mainly because compared to them her chakra molding skills and her ability to detect genjutsu happens to be much more refined. Sakura is noticably weaker than Naruto and Sasuke when it comes to physical strength however she proves that she is able to fight with the same amount of drive as they do during the Chuunin exam. Later in the series, Sakura is trained under Tsunade.
