By tradition, if any witnesses are to be found while the Sakurazukamori was doing their work they were to be killed. When Seishirou was eighteen, on that fated night, the young
Sumeragi Subaru witnessed the Sakurazukamori killing another one of his victims. Instead of eliminating the young Subaru, due to Seishirou's facination of Subaru's purity,
Seishirou let him go leaving a bet, the mark of the Sakurazukamori on his hands, and a section of his memory erased. Unbeknownst to Seishirou, he had just made a bet with the
future thirteenth head of the Sumeragi clan.
The bet would take place the next time the two meet. For a year they would live near each other and spend unconsiderable amounts of time together. Seishirou will do anything in his power to love Subaru for a year. If in the end of the year Seishirou would have feelings for Subaru, to think of Subaru being special and not just a mere object, then Subaru would have won the bet. Seishirou will continue to love him and protect him. Thus, sparing his live. If at the end of the year Sseishirou is not able to differentiate Subaru and a normal everyday object, he would kill him.
Seven years later, Seishirou and Subaru meet again. Seishirou is now a twenty five year old veterinarian in Shinjuku of the the Kabuki County and Subaru was now a sixteen year old high school student who spends more time doing his onmyouji work than school work. Seishirou and Subaru met again but this time in the Ikebukoro train station while Subaru was chasing what would most likely be a shikigami of Seishirou's. Even while Subaru was wearing the magical gloves which were given to him by his grandmother to cover the marks of the Sakurazukamori and to prevent another confrontation with the Sakurazukamori and her grandson, Seishirou knew right away that Subaru was the one whom he made the bet with.
Throughout the year the bet took place, while around the Sumeragi twins,
Seishirou acted as if he were just another happy citizen of Tokyo. Whether it be flirting or going out to eat, Seishirou tried his best to spend as much time with Subaru as possible and protect him of the dangers of his onmyouji job while in the process
refrained from killing Subaru during all the chances he had. Having Hokuto, Subaru's older twin sister, around frequently made Seishirou's job of getting closer to Subaru alot easier because Hokuto supports the relationship of Seishirou and Subaru. She is almost
obsessed by the idea of forbidden love between the two.
During this year, it is known that Seishirou lets the Sumeragi twins know about his onmyouji powers and he his connection to the Sakurazukamori asassins. However, Seishirou also covers this with many lies about he is the heir to the Sakurazukamori and his friendly personality would not make him good Sakurazukamori assassin.
As the year came to an end, Hokuto began to sense the Seishirou was hiding something from her and her brother. Whenever Hokuto brings the subject of Seishirou having a split personality, Seishirou would just simply change the subject. Even though she suspected that Seishirou wasn't who he seemed to be, she still continued to support the relationship between him and Subaru.
