+ Entourage
When Sesshoumaru travels his entourage consists of two people. Jaken, a fellow demon, and a human girl, Rin. Although it they may seem to be an odd combination, the reasons why they are his comrades are mainly because they choose to be. Jaken Of all people, Jaken would be the most loyal to Sesshoumaru. Although he is his faithful servant, there are times where is skeptical of Sesshoumaru and questions his authority, however once Sesshoumaru knows of this it is quickly changed after a few beatings. No matter how much he is abused by his master, he continues to follow him and his orders no matter what they may be. The reason why he follows Sesshoumaru is not known in the manga however in episode 79 of the Inuyasha anime his past is explained. As told by the anime, Jaken used to be the ruler of his kind in the Musashino fields, which is most likely in western Japan. One day, a demon who ruled the nearby mountains attacked his clan. The battle was interrupted by Sesshoumaru, who was casually traveling. The demon who was attacking Jaken was in Sesshoumaru's way and wouldn't move when he demanded her to, so in his attempts to clear his path he killed the demon leaving Jaken unharmed. In shock of this happening, Jaken becomes in awe with Sesshoumaru and decides to follow him. His minions were confused by this, but Jaken just simply shrugged them off by telling them to leave him alone. Jaken continues following Sesshoumaru, and when they reach a waterfall Sesshoumaru raches out and grabs a staff. He throws the staff towards Jaken saying that he will allow Jaken to follow only if he can use it. Jaken, of course, takes the staff and to this day, he's still following Sesshoumaru. His reason? He was hoping to return the life debt. Is Jaken useless? No. Rin Rin is the little girl who follows Sesshouaru around. She first appeared when Sesshoumary was injured after a battle against the Tessaiga while using an arm of a dragon. Rin constantly offered Sesshoumaru while he was recovering but they were all refused. It was not until Sesshoumaru asked her where she got the wounds on her face that Rin felt that someone truely cared for her. When found dead in the woods, Sesshoumaru decided to test out his Tensaiga and as a result Rin was revived. Ever since, Rin has been taken care of under the watchful eye of Sesshoumaru. The question is why? Sesshoumaru dislikes human by why does he allow her to follow him? Sesshoumaru is known for his great dislike for humans, so why does he let Rin follow him around? Sesshoumaru doesn't hate humans for being humans but rather he probably dislikes humans who are going to war to gain territory which was once his and other youkai. Rin followed Sesshoumaru because it was her choise to. If she hadn't followed, she'd probably be left to die again because the people of the village she was residing in were slaughtered and she would probably run out of resources to live on because she probably doesn't know how to plant things to eat or she could simply be killed agin. Sesshoumaru probably made the decision to become her guardian because it was a mutal thing to do. This girl had tried to help Sesshoumaru recover without even considering the threat Sesshoumaru may cause. Maybe it's his way of thanking Rin for her being worried for him while during the recovery period in the forest. The way Sesshoumaru is raising Rin is obviously signalling that he may abandon Rin when she is old enough to take care of herself. It seems as if he is trying to teach her the skills to survive alone in a hands off approach. For example, when she told Sesshoumaru that she was hungry, Sesshoumary simply told her to find food herself, however he also tells Jaken to look after her while she is searching. When she did find the food, she also thought of a brilliant idea of taking some food back with her incase she gets hungry again. As Rin grows older in the series, this will most likely happen when the series is over, a problem of the acceptance of time may arise. Rin, being a child, most likely doesn't understand the essence of time. She probably doesn't realize that one day she will age and grow. As she ages, she will realize that Sesshoumaru will not look any different than he did when she first met him. This may drive her insane, as with many other characters in various other books which situations associated with aging and time such as this one. + BACK |
