+ Personality
A few things one must consider before analyzing Sesshoumaru's personality is that he is not human. A good character to compare Sesshoumaru with would be his younger brother, Inuyasha. In the ealier part of the series, Inuyasha complains to Kagome that on the nights where he is human, he sometimes feels overwhelmed with emotions and when he back in hanyou form his emotions still do bother him but to a lesser extent. Since Sesshoumaru is a youkai, it is most likely that his emotions are a minor thing in life. Unlike his companions, Sesshoumaru is most often quiet and reserved. He likes to keep his thoughts to himself and he also likes to be left alone. He only interacts with other people only when he wants something from them or just simply to annoy them in the midst of battle. It isn't known how old Sesshoumaru was or how close of a relationship he had with his father before he died, however it is evident that Sesshoumaru adores his father. Especially during fights which are situated in or near his father's tomb. Sesshoumaru's adotation for his father is so extreme that it seems as if Sesshoumaru's motive in life is to gain power or at least to become as powerful as his father had once been. Yes, Sesshoumaru is already very powerful and his feared by many demons, but it is his immaturity that drives him to achieve further in his wealth of power. First it was wanting the Tessaiga but after realizing that he couldn't have it he attempts to destroy it. After nearly being killed by the Tessaiga he seaches for a new sword who's power can rival that of the Tessaiga. Presently in the manga, Sesshoumaru is obligated with Naraku, but once Naraku's dead it is entirely unknown what he will do. However, it is possible to speculate that he may kill Inuyasha. At the moment, he has no intention of killing Inuyasha however once Naraku's dead during that last fight will probably determine Inuyasha's fate. Sesshoumaru is proud of his father, and if Inuyasha is able to handle the Tessaiga in a way that it can impress Sesshoumaru, Sesshoumaru will gain respect for him. If Inuyasha proves that he is a fool, Sesshoumaru may decide that the Tessaiga is 'too good' for him and in the end he may kill him. Sesshoumaru's quietness is most likey associated with his loneliness. Yes, he has companions, but he doesn't talk to them openly. If Sesshoumaru had been close to hise father in the past, it is safe to assume that Sesshoumaru is still depressed about his father's death. If so, it would also be safe to assume that Sesshoumaru would tell everything openly to his father. It is natural for a child to tell his or her parents everything, but when the person you're telling all your deepest secrets to suddenly dissapears who is there to talk to? Then there's the issue about his mother. Who was his mother? Well, she was obviously a dog youkai like he and his father is, but what became of her? Did she even have an partaking in Sesshoumaru's life? Maybe Sesshoumaru never even met his mother. Although all these questions are not so far not answered in the manga or the anime, it is hard to interpret exatly whether or not these things are the cause of Sesshoumaru's antisocial behavior. Sesshoumaru has a great dislike for humans. It could be because during the time which the story it set many wars has already occured and will continue that way. What would most likely be the cause of Sesshoumaru's dislike for humans was that these wars were all associated with humans. Humans are taking over the land which youkai of his kind and others had claimed in their own wars in the past. In Sesshoumaru's eyes, he probably sees humans are inferiors because they do not have extroadinary powers like him and other demons. + BACK |
