+ The Swords
Throughout the anime and the manga Sesshoumaru has been involved with three particular swords. The Tessaiga, the sword of extroadinary powers, the Tensaiga, the sword of life, and the Tokujin, the sword which can rival the powers of the Tessaiga. Tessaiga Sesshoumaru's first objective in both the manga and the anime is to find and claim the Tessaiga. He finds the hidden location from Inuyasha by force and he does find the Tessaiga before Inuyasha does. Realizing that there is no way for Sesshoumaru to hold the sword, because he is full youkai, he still is determined to claim the Tessaiga even after the loss of his left arm due to his first battle against Inuyasha. With the help of Naraku, he also fails to claim the sword, so then he resorted to breaking the sword. If he broke the sword neither Inuyasha or he could have the sword. So, by aquiring a dragon's arm he attempts to break the sword, but again he failed but this time he is seriously injured. Shortly after Sesshoumaru aquires the Tokujin, and eventually realizes why he cannot have the Tessaiga. While traveling, Sesshoumaru noticed a change in Inuyasha's blood. Instead of the smell of a hanyou, he had the smell of a full youkai. To verify his findings, Sesshoumaru visits and old friend, Bokusenou, an old Magnolia tree, and there he explains to Sesshoumaru that the Tessaiga had another use other than a materiel for battle. It is also used to contain Inuyasha's youkai blood from taking over his mind. Tensaiga The Tensaiga is the sword which Sesshoumaru inherited from his father. The sword usually stays sheathed because Sesshoumaru does not find a use for a sword that heals. Sesshoumaru eventually learns the importance of this sword after 'testing' it out numerous times after realizing that the Tensaiga saved his life after a certain battle between him and Inuyasha. He used it to save Rin, to revive the head of Goshinki so that his teeth could be used to make the Tokujin, to fight against guards of the 'other world' to enter the tomb of his father and countless other acts. As Sesshoumaru was growing up, his father probably noticed that he was in the persuit for power and he probably also noticed some dislike towards humans. When Inuyasha was born, he probably knew that he was going to die and had prepared two swords for his two sons. Tessaiga for Inuyasha and Tensaiga for Sesshoumaru. Knowing Sesshoumaru's dislike for humans and Inuyasha being hanyou, it is inevitable that once Sesshoumaru knows of his brother he will see him as a disgrace to the family and that may also result in the death of Inuyasha. So, by giving the Tessaiga to Inuyasha, he would have the strength to fight a full youkai and knowing the true power of the Tessaiga he gave Sesshoumaru the Tensaiga so that he would never die if they were to fight with full force. The Tensaiga serves as a communication medium between Sesshoumaru and his late father. Throughout the series there there has been disturbances in regards to the Tensaiga. For example, in episodes 76 and 77, Sesshoumaru was about to transform into his canine form, however the Tensaiga started pulsating. That was the sword's way of saying that it should be the one to be used instead of the Tokujin. Another example would be, in the manga, the revival of Kanta's father. In those chapters of the manga, the Tensaiga had been disturbed for quite a while however when Sesshoumaru was walking away from the scene of Kanta pleading for his father's revival the Tensaiga pulsated and Sesshoumaru did his work and successfully revived Kanta. Sesshoumaru would probably have never considered using the Tensaiga if it hadn't pulsated. Which, in other words, could be what his late father planning. He probably known of Sesshoumaru's tendencies and he probably knew beforehand that Sesshoumaru would never consider reviving or saving anyone other than himself and his very few comrades. So by using the Tensaiga, it may be his effort to persuade Sesshoumaru to do these things. By responding to the Tensaiga, Sesshoumaru learned that the sword was linked to the 'other world' and also it also served as a key to his father's tomb. Tokujin While wandering around in attempt to trace Naraku, Sesshoumaru noticed that Inuyasha had fought a battle against a demon named Goshinki, who is another offspring of Naraku, and that demon broke the Tessaiga. Sesshoumaru investigates the scene, and takes the head along with him to a swordsmith by the name of Kaijinbou, who is known to make evil swords. After Kaijinbou's completion of the Tokujin, not realizing that the soul of Goshinki still resided in the teeth which was used to create the Tokujin, he became posessed by the sword and went on a search for Inuyasha, the one who killed him. He does find Inuyasha, but he ends up getting stalled by Miroku and eventually Sesshoumaru comes to claim the Tokujin. Toutousai, who was there with Inuyasha, warned Sesshoumaru to not touch the Tokujin because it would also possess him, but Sesshoumaru proved him wrong. Sesshoumaru's reason for creating this sword was that if he were to create a sword from the teeth of a demon who bit apart the Tessaiga, he would have a sword who's power rivals that of the Tessaiga. A special power which the Tokujin has is its pressure. For example, if Sesshoumaru was to hold out his sword, the pressure emitted from the sword is able to blow back its enemies. + BACK |
